Johnny Cash -- "Hurt"
I hurt myself today,
to see if I still feel.
I focus on the pain,
the only thing that's real.
The needle tears a hole,
the old familiar sting.
Try to kill it all away,
but I remember everything.
What have I become?
My sweetest friend.
Everyone I know,
goes away in the end.
And you could have it all,
my empire of dirt.
I will let you down,
I will make you hurt.
I wear this crown of thorns,
upon my liar's chair.
Full of broken thoughts,
I cannot repair.
Beneath the stains of time,
the feelings disappear.
You are someone else.
I am still right here.
What have I become?
My sweetest friend.
Everyone I know,
goes away in the end.
And you could have it all,
my empire of dirt.
I will let you down.
I will make you hurt.
If I could start again,
a million miles away.
I would keep myself.
I would find a way.
Yeah, I know it was written by and originally performed by Trent Reznor of N.I.N., but man! I'll be damned if Cash didn't make this song his own. His cover is just so poignant.

He is one of the few performers who's death affected me deeply. The world is brightened by his work, and dimmed by his absence.
That has always been one of my favourite songs of his. I've had a running argument with another friend who says the rezner version it better. They are quite simply wrong.
Johnny hasmade a believer out of me, that there can be good thingsto comeout of "country" music. Though his music is a lot more country than what is being called that by today's standards. And I think that his last albums, which include this song, are a reflection of his contempt and disgust with Nashville and country music. And in doing so he has actually acquired some fans that wouldn't normally have paid attention, and thus his genius is past on to a new generation.
I love this song. And I agree with the Doc on this, Rezner just didn't have the past and history that Johnny had to really pull it off. Great song, great video. Now to go pick up the album, finally.
Walk the Line turned me into a Johnny Cash fan. Buying and listening to his greatest hits album cemented my gayness for the Man in Black.
